What is a Copywriter -- Differences in Writing Styles
By asking "what is a copywriter" you are asking more specifically what a copywriter writes. After all, there are a lot of differences in writing styles and formats, with each type of "writing" job taking up a different style. Wrapping your head around the differences of each type of writer could take you a while, so I've written up a short definition of a copywriter to clear everything up!

A Copywriter is a person who writes content for a company for the purpose of selling a product or service. The copywriter must describe the product/service in a way that convinces the reader to make a purchase. Copywriters write anything from long sales letters to short product descriptions.

Becoming a copywriter often takes a bit of work, at least in the beginning. Finding clients on your own is an option, but most copywriters end up joining a company. Your job as a copywriter could be as general as writing all the content for a website or as specific as only writing content that is going to be seen by potential customers.
What is a Copywriter -- How to Start
There's more than one way to begin your career as a copywriter. You may start by getting copywriting clients and then learning the trade as you work.
Another option is to go through a copywriting course first, though these courses tend to be expensive ($500 and up for an online course, for example). I encourage anyone interested in copywriting to first read up on the trade, especially how copy (written content with the purpose of convincing readers to buy) is written.
